The emptiness and desolation of the picture obviously speak to those feelings rather directly. But the actual elements speak somewhat more specifically to the way I've felt recently. The shelf has a purpose, to contain something, books perhaps, information, a purpose. I've become quite apathetic as of late, and have not used my "shelf" as it were to hold something new in quite a long time.
